York’s newest Premier Inn, designed on behalf of client CBRE and Whitbread Plc, transforms the site of a former Carpetright store on the corner of Foss Islands Road and Layerthorpe, bringing the site back into active use.
The hotel, which includes 188 bedrooms and a restaurant, is the city’s second Premier Inn, and looks to meet the demand for hotel rooms in the city from the 1.6m overnight visitors. At the time of the planning application in 2021, the council was informed the city’s existing Premier Inn on Blossom Street is usually 98% fully booked.
Our plans sought to create something special, in keeping with York’s iconic architectural heritage. With existing buildings dating back centuries, our design team worked hard to deliver a building that is both architecturally interesting and preserves the heritage of the site, whilst also embracing the latest methods of construction and environmental design.
The development combines two tones of brickwork alongside high-level cladding to seamlessly integrate the development into its surroundings.
