We’re pleased to share that planning has been approved on Barnsley West, one of the largest and most prestigious developments in Yorkshire, which has been described as a “massive game-changer for the town”.
The project, which we’ve worked closely with Leeds-based developer Sterling Capitol on, sits within a 122-hectare site close to Junction 37 of the M1 and will see the creation of 1.2m sqft of employment space for modern advanced manufacturing, storage and distribution, a strategic link road, a brand-new primary school for up to 420 children, shops and community facilities.
Alongside Sterling Capitol, Doncaster-headquartered housebuilder, Strata Homes will create 1,700 new homes.
Sir Bob Murray, founder and chairman of Leeds-based Sterling Capitol, highlighted to the media that the development would create 2000 new jobs and deliver a multi-million pound investment for the region.
He said: “The decision to give the go-ahead to Barnsley West is welcome news. In the challenging economic times, this development will provide much-needed jobs and investment and will be a massive game changer for the town and the surrounding area. It’s a defining moment – the key to future prosperity.
“On a personal note, this means so much to me. I have a real affinity for the site, which lies on top of an open-cast coal mine. My father was a miner, and I built the Stadium of Light, the home of Sunderland AFC, on top of Monkwearmouth Colliery. It’s so important to breathe new life into sites with such illustrious histories.
“At Sterling, we have worked so hard on this development for over 10 years. We know Barnsley well, having always believed in its potential and having a distinguished track record there.
“Now that planning permission has been granted, we are completely focussed on delivering a transformational flagship employment site which will drive the town and the borough’s renaissance. But this is about more than development—it’s about long-term investment, opportunity, and confidence in Barnsley. Barnsley West represents a major step forward in helping secure the area’s economic future, and we’re proud to be at the heart of it.”
Paul Mitchell, Chairman at The Harris Partnership, commented: “We’re thrilled that Barnsley West has been granted approval by Barnsley Council, as it marks a major milestone in a project which started over a decade ago and which will have a massive impact, not just locally, but across Yorkshire as a whole.
“This is the latest project we have worked on with Sterling Capitol having supported the team there on several transformational projects which have not only created much needed high quality new spaces but also many job opportunities.
“Most recently we worked with the team on its Capitol Park project also in Barnsley which has created 650 jobs to date and will deliver a further 500 in the future. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with them and to see Barnsley West come forward.”
