The Blackburn Wing, Leeds
Client: The Bayford Group
Project: Aviation meets treehouse in this multiple award winning design for an airfoil-shaped weddings and conference venue built into the tree canopy on the listed Bowcliffe Hall estate near Bramham, West Yorkshire where the building forms the centerpiece of a £6.5m master planning and restoration scheme.
The Wing comprises a series of arched timber ribs that form the basic wing-shaped structural skeleton clad in a clean copper skin. It is suspended mid-air on a piled column foundation setup with tensile steel members and cantilevers out 30m giving the appearance of an airborne wing.
Inside The Wing rests a glass ‘cockpit’ atrium holding the building accommodation comprised of 3m high glazed facades that deliver spectacular views across the valley below. Works also included transforming the main Bowcliffe Hall dining area into the ‘Bowcliffe Drivers Club’, restoring the former cricket pavilion and Rosemount Cottage into office accommodation.
